What should I do about my blood sugar until I can see a doctor?
I checked my blood sugar on Christmas Eve with my mother's machine - it was 425. This is the worst time of year to get in to see a doctor so I am trying to control my blood sugar with my food choices (low carb, low glycemix index). I couldn't get a testing machine until last night because I have to stay at work for days and I am not allowed to leave. I had eaten 2 vegetarian sausages(6 carbs) for breakfast, no lunch and hummus and pretzels (20 carbs) and carrots for dinner. My sugar was 325 after the dinner. Obviously my plan was not working.
Today, I did some reading and tried triscuits (because they are whole wheat), eggs, cheese and almonds. My sugar was 165 after eating this. (135 when I woke up) So, the triscuits were not I good idea.
I am a vegetarian, so meat is not an option. Does this mean that I have to eat only eggs, cheese and nuts until I see a doctor? Do I need to try to keep my sugar around 100 or is there an acceptable range because I don't have medication - like under 200?
I did discover that a medication I am taking - hydrochlorothiazide - raises blood sugar levels. So, maybe my sugar will be easier to maintain when this is out of my system.
Thanks for your advice :)

If his hands were clean, the meter was properly calibrated (and accurate), and the right code for the test strips was used, then yes, he needs to see a doctor. Even with the 20% variation, he is WAY over the limit for normal fasting BG. I would recheck all the steps I gave you. If his reading is still high, make a Dr.'s appt. He is obviously still making some insulin, so even if he is developing Type 1 diabetes (the non-preventable insulin dependent kind), so don't panic just yet. We can't stop this form, but following the diet recommended for Type 2 diabetes may help in the meantime. If your friend has Type 2 diabetes, a healthy diet, weight loss, and exercise can make a huge difference. I do not recommend exercise if his BG's are high (especially if he is developing insulin deficiency-that can lead to dangerous ketones), but following a diet of mostly low carb veggies and lean meats may help reduce the spikes. See the doctor as soon as possible, and go from there.

You are on the right track for now. Rather than ask here, try www.diabetes.org. Good luck and don't put off seeing the doctor both for the potential diabetes and how the other med may be having undesirable affects.
