A very possible worst case: The bearing(s) heat up so much as to ignite the rear end fluid, and it catches fire. Debris in the bearings have caused the rollers & races to become pitted, hence the noise you have been hearing for some time now. The debris along with the pitting creates much more heat than the fluid was designed to tolerate and it could ignite. The high heat will also cause what's left of the pinion & axle seals to melt & or catch fire too.

It's obviously only going to get better the more you drive and it will probably be all fixed by the time you get there so the sooner you leave the better...when it breaks down on the highway and you wake up from this dream throw a match at it and call your insurance company because it'll be more trouble than it's worth once you're paying hotel bills waiting for an out of town shop to fix it.

So you've had a year before the trip to get it fixed.

You would probably be looking for a used rear end somewhere in Oklahoma. Not good Fix it.
