Is it possible for a baby to be allergic to it's mothers breast milk?

My daughter is two weeks old and I had a hard time breast feeding at first so I started to pump and supplement because she lost so much weight and I noticed her seeming sick and I had a little cold so I stopped giving her my breast milk thinking I was getting her sick with my cold and she got better but when I went to the doctors and talked to them about it they said it wouldn't be my breast milk that was getting her sick it would be the close contact and that it was ok to feed her my breast milk so I started feeding her breast milk (I had saved the milk I was still pumping just incase the doctor had said it was ok to give to her) so I had enough breast milk to feed her just breast milk no more formula and she started getting sick again. . . she got the runs which I knew she would for a little just from adjusting but she had them for 4 days and she started whizzing, getting really fussy, not sleeping well at all and started looking really pail so I stared her back on formula an within the day her stool firmed up to what it should be she's sleeping better not fussy and shes getting her color back . . . is she allergic to my milk or is there just something wrong with my milk that I can fix maybe?

Your baby is not allergic to your milk. Breast fed babies have very loose stool which is yellow and thin, and usually looks "seedy." This is NORMAL. It is not diarrhea, and it is not an indication that she is not tolerating your milk. Baby should always be fed breast milk, even if you are sick, and even if baby is sick. Your milk contains antibodies which will actually protect your baby and keep her healthy, or help her recover faster from any illness. Giving a baby formula will make the stool much firmer, but this is not a good thing. Formula is harder to digest and leaves much more residue, thus the thicker and bulkier stools.

It is possible that your baby is sensitive to something in your diet, and you may want to talk with a lactation consultant to help you sort that out. A really great online source of information on breast feeding is kellymom.com.

A breast milk allergy is very rare, and in that case your baby also could not tolerate formula either. Good chance you mistaken runny stool for sickness. Breast fed babies have loose stool. And switching between formula and breast milk could upset a new baby just trying to digest food.

Please see a lactation consultant. You need some professional help to see what is going on with baby.

Contact La Leche or a lactation consultant to give you the right answer. Doctors are not that good with breast feeding help.

No your baby is not allergic to you the case for an allergy to breastmilk is less then 1% of all babies and these babies can't even get formula and require very special treatment I think you're just over worried about your baby what is causing all these changes in stool is because you're going from breast to formula, formula to breast you're confusing her stomach. Formula is naturally high in iron more then your breasts would be causes the harder stools and having loser stool with your breastmilk is perfectly fine. Your baby won't catch a cold from your breastmilk if you would actually breastfeed your baby it would be protected with your antibodies and it would help prevent situations like that and help your baby get better. You really need to educated yourself on breastfeeding speak to a consultant instead of jumping straight to formula all the time. It's not good for you to breastfeed off and on you risk losing your milk supply

Some babies have allergies such as to milk or eggs or gluten or whatever, and it gets passed through the mothers milk. My nephew was like that, and my sister had to stop eating milk, eggs, and nuts until she weaned him at 18 months old. Once she cut those things from her diet though, her son did just fine. Keep in mind also that newborn stools are supposed to be really runny, and formula often makes them constipated.

Not very likely. Keep breast feeding, no need to pump. Maybe your bottles were not sterilized properly, you left the milk out too long, or others. Watch your caffeine intake, foods like cabbage and broccoli. Eat healthy food.

no, not in general becuaes a mother's milk is formulated specificially for the baby. but rarely, some babies may have a dairy allergy so if the mother consumes dairy, it can affect the baby. your baby is probably sick from switching between breast and formula.

Everyone else brought up valuable points. My little brother had a diary intolerance and often reacted as if he has reflux and the doctor suggested my mom cutting dairy out of her diet, once she did that he was much better
