Only if you want to have some idea as to how the universe has evolved over the last few billion years. If you're content with just knowing what the Kardashians are up to, then no it's not important.

The Big Bang theory, which a more refined theory than the standard model is inflation, is extremely important. Everything that exists now was in hands of the first second of the big bang. The separation of the forces. The development of the inflation field. The Higgs. The amount of matter and antimatter. A lower entropy beginning, thus giving us a better definition of an arrow of time. Also, the lower entropy beginning makes more sense because we observe entropy increasing towards the future, not the past.

The big bang theory predicts many things. One of these is cosmic temperature. Outer space is on average around 2.3 K. It also predicted the cosmic microwave background radiation that was spread throughout the entire universe. We also see evidence through the recession of distant galaxies, indicating that the universe is expanding and it was smaller in the past.

By the way, the four forces were separated by the Higgs ocean.

The big bang theory doesn't go into what was before it. That topic is for speculation. Some say God did it. Some say it was a product of a multiverse. Some say that it was a result of vacuum fluctuations.

No. It is only a theory and has no bases in fact. Some scientists do not support the big bang theory.

I say it was just a local event in our neighbor hood of the universe. That the Big Bang did not create anything.

When the theory gets dropped in a decade or two, it will be important as a lesson of how fallible science, or rather scientists, can be. It will need to be remembered so that the same mistakes that lead to it's prominence can be avoided in future.

Everything is relative to what is going on in your life or your point of view. If you have a history exam tomorrow or a job interview with UPS, no the BBT is not important. If you are studying physics in the cosmology unit, yes it is. What's happening?
