Why do people like tan lines?

I don't like tan lines either. I sunbath topless to avoid them. As for a lot of other girls I can only assume they simply accept the tan lines as a price of getting the tan. To avoid the tan lines might expose things like breasts and nipples to public viewing. The reason I say this is because something like 52% of European girls said they sunbath topless in a recent poll. They can wear the bikini top the same as the American girls so why take it off? The best reason if you can why not and avoid the lines. American girls when they get to Europe more times as not will sunbath topless if for no other reason that just to try it, be European. Which begs the question why girls here don't at least try to avoid the tan lines if possible here? See how far they can push it before someone says something.
