Charlemagne last of Roman emperors?

Update:

This is an essay question for my Art History class and I really don't understand it. Charlemagne revived Roman culture so why would he have wanted to be the last emperor?

Charlemagne wanted to be seen as the last in the long line of Roman emperors. Citing at least three works of art , explain how art and architecture of his reign helped to stake this claim. Cite the kind of works that may have influenced Carolingian artists.

Can anyone explain this to me?

Charlemagne was not a Roman Emperor. He used that as a title but he was in no way actually a "Roman Emperor."
