In case I am not misunderstanding your question:
Actually, it may be a very useful thing for people with multiple gmail accounts. It tells you with which mail you are logged in.
Example - a friend of mine had 3 gmail accounts. One of them was her university mail. One day she had to share this very important homework through drive and the lecturer was only accepting the homework from the university mail within a given deadline. So she worked all night for that homework and shared it to her lecturer. Of course, she initially din't notice that the google drive she used was of another address (and the name in the address was not related a bit to her real name). Hadn't been for the name on top of chrome that she noticed later, she would have failed in that subject, since the lecturer wouldn't have accepted her homework from a drive other than her university's.
