    Let x be the pot's price

    Let y be the lid's price.

    x + y = 11

    x = y + 10 <-- plug y + 10 for x in the first equation and solve for y.

    (y + 10) + y = 11 <-- combine the like terms...

    2y + 10 = 11 <-- subtract 10 both sides of the equation...

    2y + 10 - 10 = 11 - 10

    2y = 1 <-- divide both sides by 2

    2y/2 = 1/2

    y = 1/2

    y = 0.5

    Now plug 0.5 for y in one equation and solve for x.

    x = y + 10

    x = 0.5 + 10

    x = 10.5

    So the pot (x) costs $10.50

    The lid (y) costs $0.50
