How do I tell if my hot water heater qualifies for the energy tax credit??
During 2014 I had a new hot water heater put in my home. While doing my taxes online (I haven't filed yet) the question came up did you make any energy saving changes to your home. I put the price of the hot water heater in and it gave me another $150 back on a $730 dollar heater. If I get it great but I don't want to cheat or be audited.
I wish I could have gave you both best answer. NA you are correct about high end heater. I would have had to spend double what I did for the savings. Not worth it. Now I have to go change my tax return.

You have to have purchased a high end water heater.
Cannot be electric (unless tankless).
A natural gas, propane, or oil water heater that has an energy
factor of at least 0.82 or a thermal efficiency of at least 90%.
The energy or thermal efficiency would be in the instruction book and/or the yellow sticker.

the free file program you are using will have either a question mark near most of the deductions where you click on the " ? " to get more info, or there will be a number to call them for info
