This is just another classic obama move to try and salvage his sinking ship of a presidency.
Obama has had a shtty presidency, largely because he's a failure who is a sociopathic liar, can't play well with others, and the only promise he kept was inducing "change" - except it was for the worse.
So what's he do? He tries to save his own a** and image by throwing tax payers under the bus by essentially saying "tax payers will now pay for your community college! Aren't I great? Don't you just love me???"
Obama is disgusting, every tax hike, every bribe, ever manipulation and rape of the American people is utilized for no other purpose than to help himself.
He calls it 2 years of college free, because if he called it what it actually was (2 years of college paid for by working folk), it may not be as popular.

I have four kids. All four went on to college. Three are working in completely different fields than what they went to school for. One is working in a nursing home as a CNA. She is still blowing money trying to pass a math class for the third time. All four could be doing what they are doing without spending the 80.000 of so it has cost me so far. From my experience college is a complete waste unless the child is committed and dedicated to doing their absolute best and following through. Two years of free college would have the colleges raising their prices and laughing all the way to the bank. One size fits all government programs are proven to be a complete waste of money.

Instead of the current K-12, President Obama wants to expand the basic public school system to be K through 14 (to include two years in a community college), and I am in favor of this change.
From 2001 through to 2009, the United States fell behind other nations (to 13th place) in science and mathematics, so the Obama administration began almost immediately to bring our standing up to eliminate this gap. In addition, the insurance reforms contained in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and its supplemental Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act (a.k.a., Obama Care or the Affordable Care Act) allow serious college students to make low-interest DIRECT LOANS through the Department of Education as a way of reducing long-term college debt (which helps our economy while also lowering costs of advanced education (such as medical school). The proposal to make the two years of a community college part of our public education system is simply following through on President Obama's ongoing effort to make sure every American who wants to can take advantage of higher education.
My granddaughter is in her second year at a Missouri community college, with an Engineering Design major, seeking her Associates Degree. Once she has gotten the degree, her plan is to transfer credits to a more expensive four-year college to finish work for her Bachelors. For now, the Pell Grant (increased by the Obama administration) has covered the college costs, but her living expenses have had to be supplemented by me, which means I have had to put repairs on my fixer-upper home on hold to make sure she has what she needs. I strongly approve of the President's plan.

my view is that the US public education system stinks. US students go 13 years, K thru 12; many graduate illiterate, can not read, or do simple math, most High School graduates have no jobs skills, and are not employable.
Most other nations educate children only about 10 years, and the graduating students achieve a higher level of literacy, reading and math skills, and most have some kind of job training and skills at graduation.
Obama's plan sounds like he wants to make community colleges part of the failed public school system, which would now be 15 years of a lousy education system that fails to educate children well.
better to have a voucher system, school choice, including community college vouchers that could be used for vocational or trade schools. every child should get the same dollar amount of the voucher, no matter if rich or poor, genius or retard, athlete or sociopath. The voucher should cover the entire cost of all but the most expensive private schools, including meals; and available to every US citizen under age 18.5 at the start of the semester. the voucher system will allow parents, students and schools to provide more innovative education choices than the one size fits all liberal arts prep-school curriculum of the department of education. some schools could focus on advanced university educations, others on vocational schools, others on a basic education and job skills for difficult students. K thru 8th grade could be common core: basic reading, writing, math and science; 9-10th grade mandatory jr. High school or vocational / trade school or apprenticeship program; 11 to 12 optional college prep high school or a more advance trade school or apprenticeship programs. Rather than the Obama plan to make the first two years of college free; it would be better to have a voucher system that could apply to either the first two years of accredited college, or master/ journeyman level trade schools. Essentially giving every US citizen over age 18 2 more years of paid tuition and meals for the college or trade school of thier choice.

Nothing is free. Obama is proposing taxing the College saving of the Middle Class to pay for "free" Community College for the poor and illegal.

I never got to go to college.
Even with the student loan debt, those who do get the privilege not only make more than me anyway... they don't even have to break a sweat doing it!
Rich get richer and the poor get poorer, in more than one respect I guess.
Like the saying goes, the liberals pretend to be on the side of the working class... but they're not any better than the conservatives.
Basically we get crapped on by both sides.

Republicans will never allow it to pass and they control congress, so it won't happen. Nevertheless, the republican governor of Tennessee has had great success with the program in his state, not only for students, but also businesses in that state.
