Upon first use of a NEW or system reset there are W8 - 8.1 → 125+ & W7 200+ updates to download & configure. If you boot the system and only display a "black screen", locate the HDD light, look for a solid or blinking indicator. This indicate the system is working. Do not disturb this process until the light settles down. Windows will display the login screen once system is configured.
If your PC is in the "black screen" mode, NEVER shut down. It could cause a complete system malfunction.
If you are currently logged on and the computer is sluggish, Windows is configuring the OS, again locate the HDD light & observe its action. This process uses most of the system’s resources, therefore games, APPS, & programs suffer as the consequence.
Desktop Screen – click on Restart & you will see an option to UPDATE & RESTART or UPDATE & SHUT DOWN.
I was performing an account deletion on my W8 laptop and encountered periods of "black screen". This could last anywhere for a couple of minutes to an hour.
The “black screen” may occur on other updates throughout the life of the computer. Windows will display the login screen once the system has configured the updates.

Press and hold the power button in for 5 to 10 seconds and it should shut down immediately. Then turn back on and see if it works.

Try unplugging from electricity, remove the battery and press and hold the ON button for 30 seconds.
Then reinstall the battery and plug-in the electricity and try turning on.
That might solve your problem.
