I think the officials probably didn't do the job they were supposed to do. As some former ball boys have said, the officials would simply feel the ball and okay them, not put a gauge on them. Then take into account that its hard to tell the difference of 1-2 psi. So I think they inadvertently let underinflated balls on the field. So it was another league screw up. However, the NFL has taken the hit on too many mistakes already this year, and they are reluctant to take responsibility for another show of incompetence. There are already enough people who feel Goodall should resign for being out of touch as far as assigning an appropriate level of importance to issues that arise. (He would expel a pot smoker for a year and give a woman beater a two game suspension.) Clearly, he doesn't want to take responsibility for this, but as commissioner he does oversee officials. So it becomes convenient to pin the Patriots as culprits, because many believe they already have a track record for cheating.

This is all a bunch of BS now. Brady and Belichick have so much to lose by lying...it just doesn't make sense for them to deny it like this. There are so many unknowns here and so many outside factors that can affect this issue. To me personally it's a BS issue that doesn't go away. If the Pats did something wrong then they should face a penalty but at this point you would have to prove intent, the pressure of the balls before game, at halftime, that colts followed rules as well and their footballs were tested...and all of this would need to be hard physical and tangible evidence. I think someone has it out for someone and created this issue.

Problem is not it doesn't matter if there was no wrong doing. The damage is done and can never be repaired which is too bad unless the League comes out and takes full responsibility and clears the team. But even then with the league issues it won't matter.

I find it odd that these types of accusations don't pop up with other teams.

I don't know if the Pats cheated. But this is at least the second, that I can think of off the top of my head, major ethical issue to come out surrounding the Belichick/Brady led team.

As circumstantial evidence and a pattern of behavior, it certainly calls into question how good they really are after all these years.

I think that considering equipment managers and ball boys from other teams have come out and stated, they don't have the opportunity to mess with the balls once they get them back from the officials out on the field. That the officials , the NFL, has to tell us/show us the documented pressures from their test before the game, before anymore accusations are tossed around. I'm also thinking if the whether did bring the pats balls down an average of one psi or so, and that brought them below the regs, then the colts balls also would have gone down a PSI or so, making their starting point overinflated.

I don't think Brady and Belichick would claim innocence so vehemently if they weren't being honest. They are leaving themselves no way out if it turns out they are lying -- they will have ruined their own legacies and the legacy of their owner, Bob Kraft.

At this point, I can only assume that they are telling the truth, and this is yet another colossal NFL screw up.
