tax question?
My fiance and I are trying to decide which is the best way to claim our 11 mo old on taxes. She didn't work at all this last year and I have been the only income. She receives no other sources of income and has only medicaid for insurance. Would it be more benifical for me to claim our daughter on our taxes or for her? Thanks!

If she had any income at all, then you should run mock returns both ways, and choose whichever option gives the best combined result.
This can be done very easily using tax software. Start both returns (yours and hers). Do both returns without the child and write down the amount of each refund or amount owed. Then add the child to both returns, and see who gains the most from adding the child. Then delete the child from one of the returns to make sure you don't end up with a duplicate claim.

My guess would be that you should claim the child and claim HOH. (head of household.)
If your fiance made less than 3950 last year, you can claim her also if you lived together all year. (still claim HOH and claim her as a dependent. Once you are married, you would change to filing a joint return and then claim the child together even if only one of you has an income.)
If your fiance made less than 3950, and you claim her as a dependent, she can still file her own return and just select that someone else can claim her as a dependent. She would get a refund of anything in box 2 of her W-2 form.

She has no income and therefore no reason to file a return. Clearly you supported the child and can claim the exemption.

If she didn't work all year, she wouldn't receive anything anyway.
You should claim her. You MAY be able to claim your fiance as well if you meet all of the rules.

She will get zero if she had no income. You might get something. You claim the baby, and file as head of household.

If she had no earned income she can't get any credits so you should claim your kid.

this is a no brainer, she has no income she is NOT filing a tax return thus there would be no choice for her to claim the child
