I have TWO Windows 7 computers, ONE Windows 8.1 computer and one Linux computer all on ONE network. All can see each other and share files. No problems.

When setting up a home network there are some rules to follow.

All connected to the same router, preferably by Ethernet cable.

All have the Same Workgroup name.

All have a DIFFERENT PC name.

All have a user account Password.

All be set to Obtain IP address Automatically from the Router.

I got HomeGroup to work ONCE, but I have NO IDEA how I did it, I recommend bypassing HomeGroup and using standard/legacy sharing. Make sure that you set all of your devices to the same workgroup because some devices have trouble otherwise.

Homegroup is useless do not use it. Just set up normal file and printer sharing with a common network name.
