My laptop monitor only shows a black screen with a cursor. How do I fix this?

I'm using a Asus laptop with windows 8.1. The sign in screen shows up, I enter my password, and nothing loads after that on the monitor. I can open task manager with ctrl alt del. Restarting or shutting down doesn't work. What should I do to fix it ?

    Start Task Manager and then click

    File

    Run New Task

    in the Run box type:

    Explorer.exe

    Then press Enter

    ◘

    Then you can try updating the Graphics Driver, run Windows Update.

    Maybe a System Restore to a recent day it worked right.

    I can't figure out how to add details but before anyone says this: never once when purchasing a laptop on my life did I ever receive any type of disk to reinstall or repair
