You won't see a power surge, unless something overloads and catches on fire. Modern electronics are designed to NOT do this, however. But if it happens, you're likely also on fire because you've just been struck by lightning, so you probably won't notice much else...

And get a surge protector. They're cheap.

However a surge protector won't protect against a power outage. A power outage COULD damage your system if it happens at a crucial moment, such as when trying to save your game.

If you live in an area with REALLY poor power quality then you'll probably want to consider a small uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for your electronics. This is a large battery capable of running your equipment for a few minutes, so you can safely quite and power down everything.

A power surge doesn't look like anything, you wouldn't notice it unless it's enormous (exploding light bulbs kinda thing)

If you lay close attention, you might have seen the lights come on bright then dim to their normal operating brigtness. This is a power surge. When power re enters your house from a step down transformer, it comes in with a bit more force. (Like when you first turn on a hose , the water comes out at more pressure then slows down)

For things like your houses internal wiring and lighting, this isn't a big deal. Those wires are actually capable of handling a lot more voltage then they're rated for. In the case of very sensitive electronic equipment, it can be bad, and even dangerous. A higher voltage can actually damage the internal components of a system, more specifically systems that have motherboards like a console or pc. Surge protectors are good (they trip when overloaded) but aren't perfect. If you have a bad storm coming, or expect to lose power, you should

Source(s): Unplug any sensitive equipment and refrain from using it. Th ing like cell phones, computers and game consoles

Unless you are loading a game or data online where corruption could occur then a power outage should'nt damage the system.

In the UK all residential properties are protected against power surges at the electrical installation although this obviously does not include lightning strikes.
