What gives the U.S. government authority?

I mean besides threatening to kill or jail us if we don't do what they say.

Nothing. No government has any actual authority, unless you voluntarily agree to their laws. I would gladly join an America that follows the Founders vision. In this state, I would never willingly join. But I was born here and am forced to live by their laws, what can I do but wait?

the Constitution. It's the basic agreement between the government and we, the people.

Our mutual agreement to abide under an orderly and lawful society in order provide the best environment under which to grow and thrive. We decided a strong, representative government was the best means to protect ourselves from other organizations who would want to kill or jail us if we don't do what they say.
