Trig word problem?

Ok, so what is the shortest way to get from point A to point B, but you need to make a stop by the blue river along the way.

Update:

I got √130 ≈ 11.4, but I want your answers

    If you imagine reflecting the point B across the river, to a point B', the distance AB' will be the same as the shortest distance from A to the river and then to B.

    That forms a right triangle with legs of 7 and 9.

    Using the Pythagorean Theorem:

    7² + 9² = c²

    49 + 81 = c²

    130 = c²

    c = √130 ≈ 11.4

    Answer:

    I agree with your answer

    √130 units or about 11.4 units

    I'm fairly sure you need differential calculus to solve this one, and if you are having to ask this, you probably need to talk to your tutor, otherwise you are not going to pass your finals.
