Ubuntu may look more like Windows 8...except that it actually works.
Linux Mint will look more like Windows 7 and Vista...and it works.
I am using Mint 17 Cinnamon......its as easy as 1-2-3.
Most any linux will work on windows computers....but some HP laptops like the HP 2000 netbook seem to struggle with both windows and linux.
I highly recommend linux mint with the cinnamon desktop.
