I think that their are a lot of circumstances that are not being explained. When my father went on a month long business trip and stayed in the same city as my grandparents, he did not tell them and he orders us not to tell them. I was because he felt like it was none of their business to know the comings and goings of our family. I don't believe that this applies to you. I'm not sure what to say to you because their could be reasons that you don't know about. Maybe your mom's family and your dad's family don't get along because of their values or religion. I know this one family who doesn't let his wife talk to her family because their Muslim and he's Jewish.
Without knowing more of the situation, I can't give you very good advice.
