When leaving a dentist, is it common practice to not be able to get your records sent to your personal email?

Update:

The receptionist said that they will forward only xrays to another dentist, never to a patient and that was "what everyone does." I'm pretty sure that's not correct. I know a dentist who gave his patients all their records when they moved or changed dentists.

Update 2:

Thanks, I would've opted to come in and get them but apparently they only email to other dentists.

Update 3:

Not that it matters, the care I rec'd from the hygienist was superb. Issues weren't the treatment.

You are entitled to your records, or copies, but you might have to receive them in person or by "snail mail".

Not every office has the capability to scan x-rays into the computer so they can be emailed.

It is a gray area with HIPAA since your email is almost certainly not encrypted. Regulations are currently being debated and worked out regarding emailing patients their own records.
