Looking for advice on colleges?

I am a high school student preparing for college. I am looking at a career in computer animation and I live in Iowa (USA). If anyone has any advice on what college to pick and what to do and what not to do,it would be very much appreciated.

When I was researching colleges, I made a list with 3 columns: 1) Things I Need in a School, 2) Things I Would Like But Don't Need, and 3) Things I Absolutely Don't Want

Then just start researching. I was from Iowa, too, and I had "small school" under the need column and "big school" under the last column. So right away, U of I, ISU, and UNI were out for me. If you are looking for a smaller school and want to stay in the state, Iowa has TONS of small schools (Coe, Central, Luther, Buena Vista, Iowa Weslyan, Wartburg, Upper Iowa, etc.). Just start Googling "Iowa colleges with computer animation major" and see what you get. If you want to go out of state, your options expand even more. After you have a list of 10-20 schools, start to narrow it down to 5-7 schools. Tour them if you can. Then eventually narrow it down to your top 3. Then I would apply to those 3 schools (schools have started to waive application fees..if you want to apply to 5 that would be fine too. Probably don't apply to more than 5). From there, see what schools accept you and give you the best financial aid package. Weigh the financial aid award against your list of pros and cons, and go with what school you feel led to go to. Good luck!
