Because most early colonist in America, including the Founding Fathers, were highly religic people (like puritan). This is because they fled the religic-intolerant Europe, where catholicism was fighting with everything else. They, the colonist, were the ones that built up America and in effect religion has influenced the way American society has been molded and created.

Religion and politics have always been tightly twisted together, since time immemorial. Since ancient times when a king stepped out onto the balcony of the palace to address his followers, he's always wanted a holy man standing beside him to assure the people that God chose their king, and that the king serves the will of God. So to oppose the king is to oppose God himself. To this day, coronations (even in UK) are performed in the national cathedral, officiated by the highest holy man in the country.

In the US we have a particular condition in that the most religious people all seem to be in one region. We call it the Bible Belt because it consists mostly of a line of states along the southern East Coast and Gulf Coast.. If you're a political party you gain control of this region you politicize religion. You whine that the major culture in the US, and the govt., is short-changing your religion, that people in this area are being cheated of their right to their religion, and you are going to help them fight for their rights. It helps to corrupt a few money-grubbing 'televangelists' to teach their flocks that Jesus wants them to vote for THIS party, not THAT party.

This is all a strategy to set one part of the country against the rest of the country. It's actually closely related to the view you guys had in the UK 300 years ago, the idea that God picks your king and that God and the king know better about how to run a country.

The fact is, the 'divine right of kings' is one of the ideas we founded the US to do away with! But it's such a strong idea that after the electoral debacle in 2000 many fundamentalist Christians I know told me they truly believed God got involved in that election to pick GW Bush as our president! In retrospect I think God could have made a wiser choice!

  • Because the UK drove out the devoutly religious for several hundred years.

You know the ones, those puritans who tore down the king and the aristocrats. The ones that you drove out of the UK along with your poor Catholics.

Every refugee from the European religious wars and the economic wars which favored one particular in group.ended up in the USA.

Politicians use religion as a tool to bring about an end they require. It has nothing to do with faith, likewise the churees dod the same, again the self delusionment, but with a hidden agenda.

This happens because political powers disguise themselves as religious entities. The churches should all lose tax exempt status as a first step in sweeping them out of politics.
