A change purse contains an equal number of pennies, nickels, and dimes. The total value of the coins is 496 cents.?

How many coins of each type does the purse contain?

    Let n = the number of pennies = number of nickels = number of dimes.

    Let C = total number number of cents

    C = n + 5n + 10n

    496 = n + 5n + 10n

    496 = 16n

    n = 496 / 16 = 31

    Check the answer :

    C = 31 + ( 5 ) ( 31 ) + (10 ) ( 31 )

    C = 31 + 155 + 310 = 496 -------->[ OK ]

    The change purse contains:

    31 pennies <----------------

    31 nickels <--------------

    31 dimes <--------------------

    Substitute for n and d in equation 1

    p + 5p + 10p = 496

    16p = 496

    p = 31

    Thus, p = 31, n = 31, d = 31
