Can I hold my University responsible if I get hurt on unplowed sidewalks?

I'm a resident of my college's dormatory housing and the attached picture is what the sidewalk looked like from the dorms all the way to campus, very sh**ily plowed and that's not the worst part.....I'M ON CRUTCHES!!! I had surgery on my knee back in November and I still have to use my crutches because I'm not fully healed and with the sidewalks in this condition my feet and crutches are slipping out from under me constantly, I want to know if I get injured because of the sidewalk conditions if I can hold my school responsible?

(I'm in Indiana if that makes a difference)

You're in college and cannot spell dormitory? Sigh...

Contact the campus department responsible for accessibility, or the health center, and make sure your requests are in writing. Email can work.

If you are too disabled to be at school, you may need to defer your education a semester. Going out on the ice to prove a point only places the liability on yourself. Perhaps you could be moved to a handicapped accessible dorm elsewhere, or defer a semester. They're not going to clear a path for you everywhere you need to go.

If you are old enough to be in college, you are old enough to be told that the world doesn't part the seas for you just because you need it to be done. No large institution is going to come to your aid because you threaten a lawsuit You are but one speck in a sea of other students, and there is a waiting line behind you to get in. If you cannot find a safe way to get to class, they'll just give someone else your spot.

Pay the maintenance guy to drive about 4 or 5 little brads into the ends of some wooden crutches for you, so you can use them on the ice and then cover the brads with the rubber cups inside. Put some socks on over your boots and tape the ankles tightly with duct tape- the socks will give you enough traction to walk on the ice. If you want to stay in school, find a way, or else go home. Spring is coming.

You can try. In my opinion the claim is bull because it's winter and snow happens. But the university does have a responsibility to maintain their property to a "reasonable" standard. What is reasonable, is of course, a matter of opinion, and that is where the arguments in court come in.

My advice, is if you can't safely walk on crutches, try to find an alternative means of transportation. Contact your university's office of disability services. Perhaps they have a shuttle van or something that picks up handicapped people.

I used to work for a snow removal contractor, and we got "slip-and-fall" lawsuits all the time. (even when we had worked all night plowing and shoveling). Typically our insurance company would settle for medical costs. So if you fall and get hurt, you might be able to recover some damages.

The fact that you think this bad enough to complain about, as if this picture was going to blow us away is laughable. Oh no, you had to wear socks and a pair of boots with a tread!
