Should I type or handwrite my novel?

My current problem is that I don't know if I want to write my future books on paper, or typing them straight onto my computer. With the novel I finished this past December, I first wrote on paper, and then typed it all up onto a Word document. I wanted a nice, clean Word document that I can print out and then go through with a red pen as I edit. But it took a month to type the manuscript, a time that I couldn't write anything new because I was pushing myself to finish typing my already completed draft.

Now as I am preparing to start a new novel, I am questioning which I should go with. I am inclined to write on paper again, because it is much easier on the eyes, keeps me from having to stare at a computer screen for hours on end, and also encourages me to be productive as I am able to see all of the pages I am filling up. However, I feel it will be much better to edit an already typed copy, because it is much easier to see a nice, neat copy, even if it still has mistakes in it. But it just takes so long to type an entire novel up myself, and whatever time it takes is stopping me from doing other things, like writing, or having a little thing called a life. I am stuck because writing on paper makes me feel like much more of a writer, but the time it takes to type up on a computer is so much that I don't know if it is feasible to do it. Help!

I've been working on writing a novel for a few months now, not that long at all really when you look at it, but at the same time we all start somewhere. I loath to write things out with pen and paper as in the end, even I have a hard time reading it. However, my best ideas come while I write by hand, when I'm out and about without my computer/tablet at my side, and I knew this would be the case when I started undertaking this project. What I did, was to carry around a notepad to write when it happens upon me. Helps me to keep my life going, as well as keep me feeling like I'm making progress on the novel when I'm not at home sitting with the computer in front of me.

I've always liked writing out my drafts first but if you're considering writing rather larger pieces like that of a novel I feel it's best to type it out. After writing so much your writing will get sloppier and harder to read and typing it out will save you from that. Also there's the chance you add something you have already written about or leave something out you thought you did, typing just seems a whole lot easier personally.

Best of luck with your work!

Hand write your drafts, if you feel more creative that way. Then when it the way you want it and you are ready to send it to a publisher, type it into your computer. Publishers really don't like to get hand written manuscripts, even if it's good handwriting.

You can always pay somebody to type it in to the computer, if your handwriting is legible enough and if you don't mind spending some money on that.

You could always try doing both. Sometimes i'll write a chapter away from my computer and then copy it over to work and then write another chapter on word then the NEXT chapter on paper so it mixes it up a little bit.

I would write it first so you will have a copy if something happens to your computer. You could also type it after every paragraph and if you change something on the written paper later you could highlight and go back on word and change it.

I'm a writer myself, and my suggestion is to write it first, that way when you do type it, you catch any mistakes and fix it when you type it up. It's worked for me. I've made plenty of written mistakes that I catch when I type the written copy up.

Every writer writes multiple drafts. If you want to submit anything, your final draft must be typed. But any draft before that is entirely up to you. Write it in crayon if you want. Do what's easy for you.

First, write it by hand into a note book, then type it on your computer.
