Advice needed, thinking about getting a hot tub?

My husband and I have been saying how badly we want a hot tub and now we are in the financial position to get one. However, as I'm reading/researching them I want to make an informed decision. Most of my concern is maintenance and upkeep.

I read that they need to be drained and refilled every 3-4 months. Is that true?

We inherited a large above ground pool when we bought our house 2 years ago and have since given it away, due to the headache it caused. (Could never get it clear, even with help of our neighbor who owns a pool store.)

We live outside of Pittsburgh so the hot tub will be used in winter where it will be down to below freezing. How hard will it be to keep the water levels and chemicals balanced, especially during those times?

Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Having worked at one point as an advisor to Balboa Pool and Spa controllers, I've seen the technology they use to keep their pools clean. They use UltraViolet light to kill bacteria. I don't know if they also use chemicals to hold down or prevent the growth of moss, mold or algae, I'm not an expert on such things. But one HUGE thing I noticed was that in their employee parking lot there's an overflow area for customer returns and warranty replacements. The parking lot (last time I saw it) was FULL of junk.

Since I retired I've occasionally looked on a website for a local "Classified" section where people are giving away stuff. I've seen TONS of hot tubs being offered for free. Some have failed after the warranty expired, others have sat in disrepair and become a mosquito breeding ground and some have burned down.

I don't know why someone would want such a thing. Yeah, they are great to get into every once in a while, but the amount of time and money you'll put into it - you're probably better off joining a gym with a spa (or jacuzzi). Make sure they're reputable otherwise you have no idea who's pea you're swimming in. On that note a home spa DOES sound like a better option; but again, considering keeping it from freezing during the winter - LOTS and LOTS of electricity just to keep it above freezing.

My advice? Do what you want. But I wouldn't get one. I have a jetted tub and that cost me $1300 for the tub. I use it probably on average twice a year. That's WAY more than joining a gym.

    Hope this helps.

If you thought a pool was a headache, you're going to find a hottub just as much of a headache.

Especially an outdoor hot tub in a cold climate. You'd try to use it one winter and find out it isn't worth the trouble. Then you'd find yourself messing around with it every spring to fix the leaks.

Keeping it clean is easy enough, about like a bath tub, although your'e going to be cleaning it out a lot more than every three months.

I personally wouldn't. Hot tubs are a breeding ground for infection
