How come there aren't five quarters in football?

Hockey has 3 quarters, college basketball has 2, how come football always has 4 quarters? Why not 5?

Quarter means one fourth, so 4 quarters would equal one whole game. Hockey has periods, not quarters, which is why there are 3, not 4. Basketball has 2 halves, so 2 halves equals one whole game.

Because football uses quarters, there must be 4. The other sports you mentioned do not use quarters.

Hockey has 3 periods, not quarters. College basketball has 2 halves, not quarters. By definition, a quarter is 1/4.

Either you're a troll or you're seriously ignorant. Come on bro.. 5 quarters in a game.. that's a redundant statement and the fact that you don't know that a quarter refers to 1/4th of something is pathetic.

This is a 60 minute contest. It is split up into quarters of 15 minutes. Laughter every day is absolutely correct 20 minutes in hockey are periods.

Because then they would have 1.25 games.

Sometimes middle school or freshman teams will play a "5th quarter" to give the reserves a chance to play against each other but it doesn't count.

Same reason there are not 5 quarters in a dollar.

Because 5 quarter would be long and people would get bored

Then they would have to stop the game in the middle of the 3rd quarter, or period, to have halftime.
