citizen's arrest?

If a violent crime involving a lethal weapon was taking place and I was able to step in and stop the attacker and disarm and I had him under control. What would I do next? Should I put him under citizen's arrest and detain him until the police arrives? Or should I make sure the victim makes an escape and then bolt it out of there myself alerting the police once I'm in a safe area? It's unlikely situation, but it's one of those make the decision while my mind is clear rather than during the situation when I'm not going to be making the best of decisions things. So what would be your course of action?

I was involved in three such situations when I was younger like that while working my way through college and in the Reserves. One place was a really rough place and we had armed security outside while the other two just drew a sometimes ignorant jerk who thought he would pull a weapon out and threaten or harm someone with it. In all three situations the police were called and charges were filed and in all three they went to jail because of previous records and a habit for getting into trouble when drinking and doing other stupid things like carrying guns or in the one case a cork-screw that the individual was known to carry. In all three cases there was no choice but to react and the fact that they had been drinking and I was not along with being aware that they had a weapon were what made the difference.
