My mom's hard drive crashed?

She said she download an update from Microsoft and then her computer wouldn't boot. She brought to a computer shop and he said it wasn't a virus and said he couldn't retrieve the data as it was too corupt. So I checked out ssd"s and got her the Samsung pro 850 its is one of the best could the same thing happen to this were it crashes and you cant use it anymore as they not cheap like the hdd's

    The same thing can happen to any storage. That being said, newer SSDs should theoretically last longer than traditional HDDs and they are faster, just not as big storage-wise

    EDIT: The correct way to prevent data loss is numerous backups. Storing everything on one place is just asking for trouble. Bare minimum setup to have decent protection vs storage failure is having the data stored on the computer, then once per week (unless its very important data) you connect a backup external hard drive to the computer and copy over all your data (don't leave it attached, if you have a lightning strike or something and its attached, its toast). Then also a cloud backup is recommended. Dropbox/Google Drive/Box are all common

    Get a second opinion from another shop with experienced technicians.  Avoid Geek Squad!
