Tearing knee pain?

So I work at a daycare with infants and toddlers which requires a lot of sitting and getting up off the floor. I was holding an infant sitting and went to stand up and when I straightened my knee I felt this intense tearing/burning pain. After a minute it went away and I was busy so I didn't really notice it until the next morning when it was stiff and sore/achy. The pain was sort of at the top of my knee and all over the front. It didn't hurt on the sides at all. I do have bad knees from years jumping in figure skating. What happened? Did I pull a muscle? Or like tear something? Now it's a bit swollen and still sore. Not sure what I did!

    You can not guess what happened, I'm afraid. Could be a few things (cartilage, tendon, muscle) and you really need to get scans to know for sure. I didn't know the cause of my knee pain until I got a MRI (the cartilage was torn). Don't wait like I did! Go to your g.p. Make sure he or she follows up with it. Getting referred to a rheumatologist would be ideal. They might need to do a few scans to rule things out. Ultimately, you'll need to go to a physiotherapist, but it's good to know exactly what's wrong in order to treat it properly.

    P.S. Initially, Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Try to avoid all squatting. If you absolutely can't, fork out for a patella strap (from a chemist), warm up your knees before squatting (or getting up) and be very mindful of your form.

    I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you what happened or if you tore anything but it does sound like you would need a doctor's visit if the pain and swelling continues. But for now, it's best to rest and ice your knee.
