What creates a fishy odor in filtered drinking water?

I used a Pur water filter for nearly three months. After two months, the water began to have a fishy odor. I solved the problem by sterilizing all of the vessels that I use for drinking water with chlorine bleach, with a hit of baking soda and vinegar as well. I replaced the Pur water filter. I know that as protein degrades and forms ammonia, the chemical process can create a fishy odor. I wonder whether a bacterial process caused the formation of the odor in my drinking water.

Every composter knows that if you have too much green stuff in proportion to too little brown stuff the nitrogen turns to ammonia and it smells like urine. Compost is basically a bacteria farm; bacteria needs water and oxygen, carbon (the brown stuff) and nitrogen (the green stuff) because bacteria are living creatures.

If your water smells fishy, I suspect some more disinfecting would be in order.

I don't know what Pur is made of but if it is plastic, and not metal ... plastic could harbor bacteria.

Were I in your shoes I'd add more bleach and do 2 or 3 rounds of disinfecting. If it's metal, fire always works.

EDIT: Or toss it and buy a new one.

Since I am in an evil mode today I recommend you listen to the last sentence on this clip (has to do with chemicals ;)

I live in Los Angeles. After a few weeks of sunny days, the fishy-smelling water comes right out of the tap. It's caused by algaes growing in the reservoirs.

An overweight woman spread eagle at the bottom of your water supply.
