Mid cycle bleeding....HELP?!?

So yesterday I woke up (cycle day 17) and when I wiped I saw a small amount of pinkish blood so I put on a pantyliner. As the day progressed it turned to bright red and by the end up the day there was about a quarter size amount of blood on liner. Today (cycle day 18) I have spotted a brownish colored blood all day. Again nothing heavy, no where near a regular period. What could this be?

Update:

If the spotting were to be caused by ovulation, when does that mean I ovulated or will be ovulating?

Spotting caused by ovulation or implantation? I guess that's where I'm confused.
