Can I draw on a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet using a nib without the rest of the pen?

I don't want to spend $60 on an entire replacement pen. I'm hoping it's possible to make a makeshift "pen" using just a replacement nib attached to something I can hold onto in place of the pen's body.

Would the tablet respond to the nib alone, or is the entire pen needed for communication?

No, you need an entire pen, which is why nib replacements are so cheap. The nips would cost 60dollars each if it was what made the tablet respond.
