When/Why did we start eating sugary things with sugar on top for breakfast?
All the things we put maple syrup on, the sugary (frosted) cereal, poptarts/toaster strudel, brown/cinnamon sugar toast, and so on. Isn't that a bad way to start the day??

Not a healthy way to start the day. Add sugar into a product and it sells like crazy. Cha ching!

"We?"
Speak for yourself, I've never had any of that crap for breakfast nor any desire to do so and very few people outside of the USA would regard those items as staple breakfast fare.
At worst I might occasionally have toast with honey or jam, but only as an addition to a non sugary breakfast (and usually only when taking rare advantage of a hotel breakfast buffet!)
But Americans are famed for two things (amongst others) worldwide: having a sweet tooth, and for having a LOT of obesity. The two facts are clearly related.

Because the body craves sugar, as it tastes nice and is a very good source of energy. This i the reason its in almost everything that we find tastes nice and the reason we put it on things such as cereal to make it taste better.
