Are you referring to surgery for Grave's Disease? Because what they usually do is remove the thyroid gland.
If it's only partially removed, then your day-to-day function may not change much at all. If it's totally removed, then you'd need to take thyroid hormones for the rest of your life. But you can definitely live without it.
