Japanese radicals?

I've read a bunch of sites saying how useful radicals are but I don't understand the point of them.

So you know two radicals which make up a kanji characters, such as 右. This kanji means "right" and the On is u, or yuu and the Kun is migi.

How does knowing that the top radical and the kuchi underneath it help me figure anything out??

It helps because it makes it easier to remember kanji. It may not seem like a big deal now but wait until you're trying to maintain knowledge of 2000+ kanji.

It also helps when you want to look up a kanji you don't know online. For me it's easier to do that then to sort through all the same kanji with the same stroke count.
