Every computer has a "recommended" shelf life - about 5 or so years, although some may run perfectly outside of this recommendation easily, provided that the manufacturer provides updated software and drivers for your desired platform (Windows, OS X, GNU/Linux).
For one thing, you have to consider your budget and what is your intended use for it. If you're just using it for Web browsing, you won't need a top-of-the-line laptop.

Surely you have some budget restrictions but if not, just look for the most expensive one on the market.
