Question about rotations about axis?

How does one determine which way, clockwise or anticlockwise, is the rotation positive?

For example if I have a rotation of 50 degrees in the xy plane, that is 50 degrees anticlockwise starting from the x axis.

If I had a 3d space, how would I figure out which direction, for example, in the zx plane, is the positive rotation?

Generally, for a rotation it is better to define an axis of rotation along with the direction of that axis and the rotation. So, for example, instead of saying a positive rotation in the xz plane better to say an anticlockwise rotation about the positive y axis. This then follows the right hand screw rule (see linked image) where you line up you thumb with the axis and your fingers curl around to show the direction of positive rotation.

Alternatively you can curl your fingers in the direction of rotation first. Your thumb then points in the direction of the axis about which the rotation is considered positive by convention.

In the xz plane, look down the y-axis from its positive end, and rotate counterclockwise around the y-axis, from that point of view.
