Should i tighten or loosen my guitar string.?

i am really new to guitars and i have an inrellitouch pro tuner and my E string (thickest string) is reading as a C should i tighten or loosen it? I am in standard tuning btw

    try loosening it at first then slowly tighten if it dosnt get into tune, but tune it slowly, if you tighten it too fast, it will snap

    You aren't in standard tuning yet, if your E string is tuned to a C. It's pretty much got to be flat (tuned low). If you were at the C above E you would have broken the string, since that's like 8 frets high, and strings don't handle that sort of thing. Whereas the C below E is only 4 frets down, and a lot more likely. So you need to tighten the string until you get up to E.

    If in doubt, Google for an " online guitar tuner" that will play the correct notes through your speakers.

    Man people pick the stupidest best answers here. There is no way for Jacob to know if you are tuned above or below the proper E, so his answer is ridiculous. What you need is a reference note. This can be found by using an online tuner. These play the note so you can hear what it sounds like. Then you tune by ear to get it as close as possible. From there you fine tune with the tuner, but it gets you close enough by ear that you know you aren't a whole octave off.
