I don't know the answer, but I have seen some old leaves pressed in a book. They looked only a little bit green.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant and helps prevent apples and some other fruits from turning brown after peeling them. You may wish to experiment with that.
Get a vitamin C tablet and crush it into a powder and rub it into both sides of the leaf. Then put the leaf into a plastic zip-lock sandwich bag.
The vitamin C, the bag or both may help keep the leaf fresher looking.
I don't know it this works, I propose it only as an experiment.

Pop it into a baggie and put in the fridge, and you can keep it good for a week or two.
If you want to preserve it for a long long time, pressing them in a book is a time-honored way to dry and preserve them.

Whether keeping a leaf alive or rooting the branch of a plant, place the stem in water.
