What is the source of audio ads on my laptop while I am doing something else?

It's a new thing.

Can't track it down.

Win7 OS.

Lasts about 3 seconds.

How do I eliminate this?

Update:

And something is slowing down the machine.

Only real change I have made is installing avast anti-virus software but it started before that.

    sounds like a redirect rootkit , go to www.bleepingcomputer.com they are leading anti-malware site on the internet and have answers for just about everything
