In the Douglas Adams Science Fiction/Comedy novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" a race of hyper intelligent aliens creates a philosophical supercomputer and tells it "Give us the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything"
The computer, named "Deep Thought", processes this request for millennia and comes up with the answer: 42
Deep Thought assures everyone involved that the answer has been thoroughly checked and proofed and it is certainly the ultimate answer.
The thing is, nobody knows the ultimate question regarding life, the universe and everything that was supposed to go with it. Deep though is somehow not advanced enough to generate the question so Deep Thought designs a computer shaped like a planet to figure out the ultimate question.
That planet is where the story proper starts.

Douglas Adams said it was the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. He meant it as a joke, but a new book shows how the number 42 has played a significant role in history

Read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it is the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life the Universe and everything.
Interestingly, if you were to drill a hole through the Earth from the north pole to the south pole so that you could travel through it and jumped in at the south pole, it would take 42 minutes for your feet to appear at the north pole or vice versa.

It's a quote from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. A very good book, incidentally.
