Hi, so my sis is having trouble solving this calculus problem. Can anyone help?

Update:

The problem:

One side of a house has the shape of a square surmounted by an equilateral triangle. If the length of the base is measured as 48 feet, with a maximum error in measurement of plus or minus 1 inch, calculate the area of the side. Use differentials to estimate the maximum error in the calculation. Approximate the average error and the percentage error.

She has been stuck on this for quite some time. Could anyone provide a detailed explanation? It would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Area of equilateral triangle is s²(√3)/4, where s is the length of a side.

    area is 977.66125 ft²

smallest area (using 48ft - 1in) is 994.20 ft² (rounded), largest area is 1001.13 ft² (rounded)

    maximum error is 23.47 ft²

For "average" error, I think you meant "relative" error = 23.47/977.66 = 0.024 (rounded)

    Percentage error is 2.4%
