If car brakes are never replaced will they fail?

In my state annual state inspections tell if brake pads are worn and need replaced. In most states without inspections it must be the owner that needs to know when they need brakes. If someone never replaced brake pads would they eventually fail and the owner could not stop vehicle at all and if they were going 40 MPH they could only stop car by hitting something?

When the friction material wears down all the way, the hard steel backing will rub against the rotors or drums, causing the most horrendous grinding noise every time you hit the brakes. Even then, the brakes will still stop the car, you'll just be grinding off more rotor with every stop. At this point, the rotors would have to be replaced instead of just being machined. I supposed eventually the rotors, or the steel backing on the pads would be completely ground away and you'd have nothing left to stop the car, but I've never heard of anyone being so monumentally stupid as to let things get that far.

Even if they did, there are ways to stop the car without crashing it. Downshift, killing the engine, or even forcing the transmission into park or reverse will bring the car to a stop in an emergency. If you have enough room, just shift into neutral and let it coast to a stop.

The answer is YES the brakes will eventually fail. The failure will likely be more along the lines of the car becoming increasingly difficult to control when the brakes are applied. In the event of an emergency stop the car could end up swerving into a different lane of even into oncoming traffic. If your inspection says you need brakes. HAVE THE BRAKES REPLACED!! The longer you put this off the more repairing the brakes will cost. If you can not afford this then you can not afford to have a car.

Simple answer, take it to get all 4 brakes inspected, look at them and ask questions of your tech. Get a free estimate. Brake shops extend this courteous policy unless excessive labor is required.

If you have to ask, find out, take notes watch yours.

If you hear trouble? it can already be too late for the hard parts, pads are cheap and having them replaced can be cheap, if you attempt it earlier than the sound starts.

Get your hydraulics inspected and flush your brake fluid. It's maintenance, don't make it a repair by neglecting it.

You cannot blame anyone for failure on a neglected system, state inspection or not required.

Offering free inspections fills a shop with work to do.

Or it plans the return of those people when they think it is

time for their pads or shoes. They see them, they have their measurements. they know.

They love to think they got some piece of mind.

They don't have to get it done right if they dont want to.

But the responsibility is still on them.

To sum up your answer? never let them come into question.

"If car brakes are never replaced, (comma) will they fail?" Is not the answer obvious? The operative word is "fail" a word from "failure." Any mechanic can inspect the brake and tires of any car for free. In fact, most oil change business have evolved to do inspections and even the work to increase profits. Many national shops have a lifetime warranty and several times a year they offer 50% off pads and shoes. The warranty is for the parts. The customer still pays for the labor, fees and taxes. Still a good deal. As many times as people use their brakes when driving unless they are properly trained or instructed the daily wear on tires and brakes becomes invisible. Most people wear out pads in about 25,000 miles. Most people do not keep tires properly inflated and rotated each year. This shortens the life of the tires. Hard braking, speeding up to brake, etc. wears out the material. Good luck.

if your brakes are never replaced or checked, your brake pads will wear right down until there is none left. after this point is expensive repairs as instead of very gradually wearing down brake pads, the caliper will instead wear down the rotor quite quickly, especially if you always use your brakes. you will still have brakes, but you should not drive the car in that condition. you will be able to see and hear if your brakes need attention as you will see the significant damage done to your rotor from the wear and grooves grounded into them, and you will be able to hear them grinding when you put you foot on brake. My mothers Prado done this about 3 times from faulty 'brake pads' wearing done in a week each time.... not fun expenses

Nothing last forever and that extends to vehicles. Though brakes just don't fail without prior signs. So watch out for signs like delayed braking and the likes. Ultimately, you will have to change your brake pads after a while.

If the car was manufactured up to three years ago this is a pointless question, any longer you should replace them but to check for now just roll it about 5mph and gently press the brakes, if you get scratching sounds then you need new brakes

Source(s): The scratching sounds are mice inside your brakes/ alternatively they are metal tangs that are designed to tell you when you brakes need replacing

Yes. But all modern cars have warning lamps for thin brake pads plus there would eventually be nasty noises that only the most intellectually challenged would ignore.

You don't need to rely on the state for anything. People are completely capable of taking care of their own cars and getting their brakes checked.

Yeah. If you don't replace them then you'll start pressing the rivets against the disc or drums and destroy your entire braking system. If the state's telling you to replace them, then replace them. States not like money greedy shops that want your money for parts that don't need replacing.
