That might mean something if I knew what about their future it was they were pessimistic about.
Do they mean whey they leave the service? Or of their ability to rise in the service, or that the training they get in the service would be relevant to civilian life? Because just saying they're pessimistic about their future in the military doesn't mean anything except that they aren't happy. For young men in a foreign country or compelled to obey rules they may not be familiar with that's not unusual.
Why would who their CiC is mean much on a personal basis to them? They serve the country, no matter who his president. Or should. If the military is overtly on one side of politics then that becomes a danger to democracy.
Seems they aren't getting enough rest, and food, and many don't trust their fellow soldiers.
This is also the first time they've had statistics, which makes your assumption that they are dissatisfied with Obama to be ludicrous.

Considering their commanders are being replaced with political minded officers too. From the Head of the Joint Chiefs on down... I'd be pessimistic too. As I watch my nation spiral towards more wars it isn't mentally nor physically apt to win. Having tossed away all the gains of the 80's through 2008.

Considering their commander in chief Obama & their Sec of War Carter
both say that they favor using high tech machines and fewer soldiers
in waging war, so maybe Fifty-two percent of GIs are pessimistic about their future in the military
because they already know.

Goes deeper than that. Fewer and fewer members of Congress have any prior military service - or knowledge. Too many think that military service is merely another job, like government civil service.

That is what the founding fathers warned against, but we did not listen. Standing armies are the CONservative's pawns.
