What is this infection?

He is super itchy under his jaw. I went out Wednesday and it looked like he scraped it on the fence or something so I put corona ointment on it. Came back the next day and it was thick scabbed over and his nose was slighty swollen. It is now scabby on his ear and the scabs are wet and yellow, dark brown. Has a fishy odor and it hasn't bled. Where the node is swollen it is wet. I put swat fly ointment on the edges of the scabs and corona on the actual thing. He is super itchy there and doesn't like me touching it. It is not strangles, I'm calling the vet out but what is it and what can i do for it? I picked off the loose scabs

I don't know what it is but wanted to let you know that it is a very good photo. The situation can clearly be seen. Good job!

ps. it could be an infected tooth, small fracture of the jaw, or even a spider bite. I came back to look again because I have seen this before. I had to think about it for a while...

Since the vet is coming shortly, s/he'll be able to diagnose this rash and determine appropriate treatment. But if the flies and gnats are bad where you are and it's going to be awhile before the vet arrives, see if you can cover it with a fly mask to protect it from insects (if he can tolerate it.) Otherwise, I think you're doing the best you can.

  • Look up sweet/summer itch online and see if that's what it seems like. Does he have any scabs on his belly? The reason I ask is my gelding has extremely bad allergies to flies and midges, and he's got sweet itch scabs all over his belly. I have to get him a fully protective fly mask & fly sheet with a belly guard. You may have to do the same if that's what your horse has.

Mind letting us know what the vet says so we can learn something, too? :)

How about going to the vet? I would recommend this before he dies from infection.
