What should I write about?

The goal of this essay is to seek to understand the cause or effect of a piece of legislation that

has passed through congress in the past ten years. You are going to make a claim that argues

whether something has caused an act to pass or whether an act has had some specific

observable effect. You may choose to look at legislation at either the local, state or federal level

for this essay. Examples of a causal claims might be, “Colorado’s decision to legalize weed has

created a demand for private security companies,” or “The skyrocketing costs of health care in

our nation led to the passage of the Affordable Care Act.” You will need to support your

argument with research. Make your argument using at least one primary source (congressional

act, speeches, a manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, novels,

poems, songs, tattoos) and three secondary sources (criticism, commentary, interpretations, or

analysis of one of those primary sources) but also with well-reasoned analysis of those sources.

I would write about the corrupt Hobby Lobby decision that brought about the horrid law in Illinois. Or you could write about the Citizens United decision that bought about the Occupy Wall Street movement that had to be taken down with violence.
