what the hell is game of thrones and why does it appeal to so many people?

I've read the books so I'm curious about how they make it look even though the books are about 20 times better. I'm indifferent. I think fans of the TV show are overexcited teenagers so considering their number, there is great appeal amongst the public but I'm not sure why though.
