My employer is paying me cash?

I work as a part time hostess at a local restaurant. They are going downhill fast and the actual owner cannot pay me without my check bouncing (of course with taxes taken out) so the past 3 times I have had to collect the bounce fee and my money through the manager out of the cash register. I have 4 uncashed checks totaling around $200. Is this illegal to collect my money and then quit before I work for free? I'm only 17 so I have no idea about any of this stuff

if he is replacing the check with cash, then you should be giving him the check back. chances are he is not paying the payroll taxes either, so you will be screwed at tax time
